Earthquake hits Ukhrul dist

IMPHAL, AUGUST 2: A low intensity earthquake hit Manipur’s Ukhrul district for the second time in five days on Tuesday morning, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said. IMD report said an earthquake of magnitude 3.5 in Richter scale occurred around 7.54 hours on August 2 with its epicenter in between latitude 24.5 and longitude 94.4 under Ukhrul region. On July 27 night, an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 in Richter scale occurred with its epicenter in between latitude 24.7 and longitude 94.2 under Ukhrul region of Manipur which had witnessed the powerful earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, in the early hours of January 4, leaving ten persons dead, 120 wounded and altogether 3218 buildings (consisting of both government and private) including the three iconic women market complexes in the heart of Imphal-the state capital, official sources said. Manipur beefs up security Security forces particularly the state police have started to beef up security cover in and around the Imphal in a move to avoid unwanted incidents prior to the Independence Day observation in the state. A combined team of the Imphal West District Police and its commando unit as part of the intensification of the security cover conducted a combing operations in and around the busy Masjid road in Imphal on Tuesday afternoon wherein around 10 suspected individuals were picked up for verification, police sources said.
