DIMAPUR — A driver working transporting poultry for the Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) was reportedly assaulted by an Assam Police personnel in the early hours of Tuesday at Dillai check post, Assam.

The driver identified as Moinul Hoque, 31 years old, was carrying a load of 1600 kg poultry in a pick-up truck, when he was intercepted at the check post by an Assam Police (Home guard) personnel, later identified as Mukibur Rahman.

Hoque told media persons that the policeman stopped his vehicle citing that they have received order from officials that poultry consignments can enter Nagaland only through Khatkhati and not Dillai check post. However, the police did not furnish any copy of the official order or notification, he said.

Hoque also said that and a helper who was along with him, was also assaulted by Rahman.

He further claimed that his vehicle was halted at the check gate for more than two hours, during which time about 150 kg poultry was disposed of by the Veterinary department as some chickens died.

The second officer incharge of Dillai Police Station, Sarat Kakoti, clarified that there is no “official order” restricting vehicles carrying poultry consignment into Nagaland. He also gave verbal assurance to the PUD members that there will be no such restriction at the check gate.

Meanwhile, general secretary of PUD, Keyigwalung, has condemned the assault on one of its members.
