DIPHU — The Diphu Regional Committee (DRC) of the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA)– Inglongpho, has alleged land encroachment by individuals described as ‘Hindi-speaking people’ near the entry tax gate under the Borlangpher Soil Conservation Range.

The land was originally allotted to the Soil Conservation Department of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council.

DRC-KSA President Litonsing Timung informed the media that this alleged illegal occupation began on October 19, 2023. However, due to timely intervention, the encroachment was prevented, he said, adding that they have now started resettlement by cultivating vegetables on the land.

He further alleged that, in order to occupy the land for permanent settlement, religious activities such as conducting Chhat puja have been observed.

Timung criticised the Soil Conservation Department for not taking any action to evict the illegal settlers and questioned why the department remained silent on the issue.

He warned that if the Executive Member and KAAC authority fail to act against the illegal settlers, the KSA will intervene to remove the encroachers. Additionally, he stated that the KAAC authority should be held responsible for any untoward incidents.

Subsequently, officials from the department visited the site and erected a departmental banner.
