DIMAPUR — Nagaland region of the National Domestic Workers’ Movement (NDWM), in collaboration with Assisi Centre for Integrated Development (ACID) and All Nagaland Domestic workers’ Union (ANDWU) commemorated ‘World Day for Decent Work’ on October 7 at Lake View Colony, Dimapur.
The speaker of the event, Dr. T Limanochet Jamir, who is also the principal of City Law College, Dimapur, highlighted the importance of observing the day. Dr. Jamir pointed out that decent work has four key components namely employment conditions, social security, rights at workplace, and social dialogue. He added that decent work sums up the aspirations of people in their working lives.
Mentioning that many might have face discrimination and expose to dangerous working conditions and receive insufficient level of remuneration, Dr. Jamir challenged the gathering to stand united and speak for their rights.
He also called upon the members to educate themselves and change their mindset saying unless the domestic workers change their mentality, outsiders will not understand their problems.
Pramila, coordinator of NDWM Nagaland, highlighted the importance of the day. She informed that ‘World Day for Decent Work’ is observed annually on October 7 with the primary mission to promote and defend the rights and interests of workers.
It main areas of activities included trade union and human rights; economy, society and the workplace; non-discrimination and equality; and international solidarity.
She explained that decent work means opportunities for everyone to get work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration.
The progarmme was attended by 160 members from different colonies.
