Kohima, July 4 (EMN):
Following the Nagaland Cabinet decision to ban commercial import and trade of dog meat in Nagaland, most of the usual areas used for selling dog meat in Kohima were either empty or replaced by vegetable vendors on Saturday.

Prior to the Cabinet decision, street vendors were usually seen selling dog meat at various points in and around Kohima town. However, except for one, none of them were available on Saturday.

The solitary vendor of dog meat said that she was aware of the ban but had to sell leftovers from the previous day “after necessary permission from authority concerned”.

The street vendor, who did not wished to be named, said that she had been selling dog meat for more than ten years now.

When asked about her alternative source of income, she replied that she sells vegetable from time to time. She added that she might have to switch to selling vegetables, now that dog meat trade has been banned.

Nagaland government had, on July 3, decided to ban commercial import, trading of dogs and sale of dog meat.
