Dimapur, November 13

The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) is reminded to shift the garbage dumping site at the earliest even as the city continues to grapple with unbridled garbage and poor civic sense, coupled with lack of government infrastructure to counter the growing concern. The DMC is warned of a legal recourse and community censure if the demand to shift the base is not complied with.A nongovernmental organization called the Green Succession of Nagaland State issued a note on Thursday addressed to the municipal council expressing concern at the pollution and hazard the dumping site has begun to cause on the surround areas.
“The Green Succession of Nagaland State (Green-SONS) would like to once again remind the Dimapur Municipal Council to expedite the process to shift the Municipal dumping site at the bank of the river Dhansiri. It may be mentioned here that the organization has been pursuing the concern authority since 2012 to shift the mentioned site as it is environmentally hazardous due to various pollutions caused due to the wastes that are being dumped at such vulnerable location…” the NGO stated in the note.
“…but the authority shows no concern to take a positive step thus far,” the organization stated and has warned of a legal recourse.
“…if the DMC or the Urban Development department does not take any initiative before the death line given by the Dhansiri River Flood Control Board and the Green-SONS which falls on 30th of November 2014 the twin organization shall take initiative to restrict of waste material to the present dumping site from 1st December 2014 and subsequently file Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the authority concern.”
