Kohima College hosts district-level youth parliament and debate competition as part of Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme.

DIMAPUR — As part of the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme, a district-level youth parliament and debate competition was held on Wednesday at Kohima College.
The event was organised by the NSS Unit of Kohima College, in collaboration with the District Youth Resources Office, Kohima, and NYKS, and sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
An update from the college stated that the event saw enthusiastic participation of students from St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama; Kohima College; and Alder College.

The programme was chaired by Zavikhoto Phinyo, assistant professor of Commerce department, while the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Vitsosie Vupru, principal of Kohima College, who highlighted that India is on a dynamic path of transformation. He urged the youth to contribute in building a strong and self-reliant India, stating that the day’s programme was not just an event but a celebration of democratic ideals.
“You are the torchbearers of Viksit Bharat and the leaders of tomorrow. May this platform foster new ideas and aspirations,” Dr. Vupru said.
In his address, the special guest and the deputy commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, has described students as the future of the nation and stated that such initiative would empower them to become a better and responsible person. According to him such platform is not about winning but about learning, growing, and becoming responsible citizens.
“Democracy is not just a piece of paper, it is a living force. If one is dedicated, one will excel,” Buchem said.
The first position in the debate competition on the topic “Emergency period in India” was won by Vuruthong from St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, while the second position was won by Yukhase Jingru from Kohima College.
In the youth parliament segment, Kajol Kumari from Alder College won the first position, while the second and third positions were won by Alika T Yeptho from Alder College and Elvina Khangshou from St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, respectively.
In a related programme, Jubilee Memorial College (JMC) in Mokokchung hosted the Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme 2025 on Wednesday on the theme “Emergency period in India.” The event was jointly organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra, National Service Scheme (NSS) and the Department of Political Science, in collaboration with the District Youth Resources and Sports Office, Mokokchung. The event was attended by Ajit Kumar Verma, deputy commissioner of Mokokchung.
