Diphu, Aug. 27 (EMN):
In order to bring peace and normalcy in the inter-state border areas, the district administrations of both Assam and its counterpart Meghalaya held a meeting at BOP, Irrigation IB Sabuda, in West Karbi Anglong on Thursday.

The meeting was held between the district administrations of West Karbi Anglong in Assam and Ribhoi district in Meghalaya. The deputy commissioners were accompanied by the SPs of the respective districts.

Speaking to media persons, DC of West Karbi Anglong, Utpala Saikia said, “In order to keep vigil, we have discussed with the DC of Ribhoi district of Meghalaya that no one should come near Umlapher, where the tense situation occurred. We will maintain peace on our side and have requested SP of West Karbi Anglong to ensure that the people are not agitated”.

The EM of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council on Thursday visited Umlapher under Chinthong Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) constituency in West Karbi Anglong, where an altercation took place between the people of Meghalaya and people of Umlapher.

The EM interacted with the local people and assured the people living in the border areas of Umlapher that the state government as well as KAAC are mindful of the recent incident at Umlapher. “My humble request to every citizen of Chinthong is to stay calm and not to do or say anything in anger. Let us stay calm and let the lawmakers do their job. Let’s not take law into our hands and maintain peace”, he urged.

On Friday, social organisations including KSA (Jemson Timung faction) in Karbi Anglong have criticised the state government and KAAC for keeping silent on Umlapher incident and failing to solve the inter-state border dispute with Meghalaya. The local also sought for a new Police outpost to be set up at Umlapher.
