With the recent inauguration of the new police “commissionerate” system in Dimapur, various changes in the working system are already at the works in the district. The issue of traffic snarls and regulations in the town center especially has always been a problem where the already deplorable roads are becoming narrower with the increased number of vehicles.
As per the new traffic system in Dimapur, two zones are said to be taking place with Zone-I coming from Municipal area, west of the Dhansiri river, and Zone-II from Burana Bazar road stretching till Piphema.
Talking to Eastern Mirror, the police’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Shouka Kakheto said that ‘the roads will not lighten but hope it will become better’. He said that since April 27, additional police personnel have reported to Dimapur from the PHQ who are presently undergoing orientations for duties.
He said that the manpower involved in traffic will be doubled especially in zone-I, as the traffic is said to be a rush. A considerable increase of manpower will take place in zone-II as well, it was informed.
When queried about the upcoming traffic rules and regulations, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of Traffic made known that the existing rules such as one-way routes, ban on U-turns, auto-timings, etc. will remain the same but will be implemented strictly.
He said that as the issue of ‘manpower’ was not a problem, various rules and regulation will be strictly followed. The department has already started keeping new signboards with more manpower, he said. He added that various rules and regulations are already being implemented in the congested New Market area.
The ACP also said that the department will be strictly enforcing the one-lane traffic rule after the orientations are completed. He highlighted that the ‘positive re-enforcement’ will be implemented wherein a selected number of commuters will be rewarded for obeying traffic rules. He also highlighted that 4 motorcycles will be kept on duty to cover the city throughout the day.
PRO Shouka said that both the zones will be looked after by the District Commissioner of Police which is the rank of a superintendent of police. While the zonal in-charge for both the zones will be under the ACP.
The PRO added that after the orientations, proper implementation will be operational by the next few days.
With the coming of the police system in Dimapur, with Nagaland becoming the second state in the north east region after Assam, the Traffic branch is perceived to be ‘improved’ with more manpower and stated resolution to implement traffic rules and regulations in the city.
