Dimapur, Jan. 16 (EMN): Marking the launching of annual oil and gas conservation month, teachers and students of Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School (LFHSS) and other officials have pledged to conserve petroleum products.

The annual oil & gas conservation month ‘Saksham (Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav)’ kick-started at Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School, Dimapur, on January 16 with Alun Hangsing, secretary of food & civil supplies and legal metrology & consumer affairs, as the chief guest.

The Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav Pledge, which was administered by T Dharamveer Singh, manager of retail sales, Tinsukia Divisional Office, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., was mainly undertaken to make the students shoulder the responsibility of a good citizen and endeavour to create awareness among the masses to avoid wasteful use of petroleum products.

The hour-long programme began with a brief introduction by Zakir Hussain, coordinator of LFHSS. T Dharmaveer Singh also delivered the welcome address, while the keynote address was delivered by Deepak Kr. Pathak, chief divisional retail sales manager, Tinsukia Divisional Office, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

In his keynote address, Pathak dwelt at length about the importance of observing the conservation awareness month for creating the much needed awareness on fuel conservation especially in India. According to him, the oil & gas conservation programme was started in 2002 by the PCRA under the ministry of petroleum & natural gas.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest highlighted the tremendous way in which India can bring about a change in terms of fuel conservation as India with a population of more than 1.3 billion people is presently one of the most highly populated countries in the world. He underscored the importance of taking up adequate responsibility to carry out fuel conservation at individual levels by conserving fuels like LPG and petrol.

The school chairman Andrew Ahoto, while welcoming the gathering to the programme, opined that the future generation would face trying times if fuel conservation is not undertaken in due earnestness. He advised the gathering especially the students to be more scientific in their individual levels so that real conservation could take place.

Stating that the word ‘Saksham’ means ‘capable,’ he felt that if every individual inculcates the spirit of conservation in their minds they would be truly capable of bringing changes. He also suggested that using bicycles by the students and staff should be made mandatory in all schools and colleges.

Earlier, the chief guests and other dignitaries were felicitated by the school chairman. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by N Kashung, assistant manager, Retail Sales, Dimapur Retail Sales Area, Tinsukia Divisional Office, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.

Saksham (Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav) is an annual flagship event of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) under the aegis of ministry of petroleum & natural gas, Government of India, with active involvement of the oil and gas PSUs along with other stakeholders like state governments for creating focused attention on fuel conservation through people centric activities and to sensitise the masses about the conservation and efficient use of petroleum products leading to better health and environment. During the year’s month-long ‘Saksham-2018’ from January 16 to February 15, various interactive programmes and activities have been planned with the campaign on fuel conservation.

The month-long campaign aims to intensify efforts for making citizens especially school and college students aware about the conservation and effective utilisation of petroleum products. For this, PCRA would carry out various student centric activities such as cycle expeditions, quiz and painting competitions etc.
