Dimapur reports two dengue cases; expert asks public to take preventive measures
DIMAPUR— Dimapur district registered two cases of dengue this month, as on June 16, according to District Vector Borne Diseases (DVBD) consultant Peter Sangtam.
However, both the patients have been discharged and are currently recovering.
Sangtam informed Eastern Mirror that a total of 55 samples, include those from Chümoukedima and Nuiland districts, have been tested this month using the Elisa test to confirm positive cases.
The two positive cases were detected in Mishikito and Lungwiram villages under Dimapur district, he said, adding that more samples will be tested in the coming days.
The consultant informed that if a rapid diagnostic test (RDT) indicates a positive result for dengue, an Elisa test is conducted at the District Civil Hospital to confirm positive cases.
RDT for dengue is also available in all private hospitals in Dimapur, he added.
While stressing on the need to prioritise preventive measures against dengue, the consultant said fogging, although commonly used to eliminate adult mosquitoes, is not considered ideal for overall health.
DVCD consultant in Kohima, Emi, informed that no dengue cases have been reported in the state capital this year, as on June 16; all the 29 samples tested between January and May had returned negative.
The consultant added that eight samples out of 220 tested returned positive for dengue last year in Kohima.
Sangtam advised the public to take preventive measures and immediately undergo a test at district hospital if one has symptoms like fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, aches and body pain.
He also urged the public to use insect repellents, mosquito nets (LLIN), ensure that there is no stagnant water in and around the house, unclog the drains and cover water tankers to curb mosquito breeding.
