DIMAPUR — Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan, on Sunday, underlined the strategic location of Dimapur Railway Station saying that the station is integral for the security of the nation as it facilitates easy movement and deployment of security forces.

Addressing the event of the virtual laying of the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 railway stations at Dimapur Railway Station, which is among the list of railway stations, the governor said that the re-development of the station is long overdue.

Ganesan said that Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, is also an important transit point and gateway for the majority of the people of Manipur and adjoining districts of Assam.

Since its inauguration in 1903, Dimapur Railway Station has marched ahead to become the second busiest railway station in the whole of North East India, which speaks volumes about the importance of Dimapur, he said.

Advisor to the Department of Tribal Affairs and Election, Tovihoto Ayemi, in his address, said that Dimapur Railway Station is one of the oldest railway stations in the Northeast region. He said the station is not only the lifeline of Nagaland but also caters to the neighbouring states.

Advisor of Labour and Employment, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Excise, Moatoshi Longkumer, who also spoke on the occasion, pointed out that one of the main attractions of the station is the shops selling and promoting local products. This, he said, will go a long way in generating livelihood and other economic activities for the local youth.

In connection, Longkumer requested the railway officials to promote local boys and girls in all the activities likely to come up under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.

Longkumer also appealed to all the citizens of Nagaland that since a world-class railway station is in the offing,  the citizens also need to change their behaviour and inculcate civic sense

Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of Lumding, Sai Singh Khongrymmai, informed that the cost of the redevelopment project is INR 283 crore and that the DPR has already been submitted to the railway board.

When queried about issues of land encroachment of the Railways, he said talks are going on to settle the issues.

The Chief Administrative Officer (Construction) NFR, PK Kshatriya, while highlighting the technical aspect of the proposed work project of Dimapur Railway Station, disclosed that the new building area will be 17, 484 sqm as against the existing 5,160 sqm.

Kshatriya also informed that the waiting hall area will be expanded to a seating capacity of 1,170 people and the parking lot to accommodate 809 vehicles.

He further said that the new station will have 21 lifts and 22 escalators and a commercial roof plaza. The estimated time for the construction of the world-class station is two and a half years, he added.
