DIMAPUR — The Poultry Union Dimapur (PUD) has called for an indefinite ban on the import of live chickens from Assam with effect from Friday.
The PUD has taken the decision to protest the alleged prevailing syndicate system governing the supply of live poultry from Khatkhati, Assam.
When contacted, PUD president Tiameren Aier told Eastern Mirror on August 9, that the union lodged a formal complaint to the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, against the syndicate system of live poultry supply from Khatkhati.
The union, in the complaint letter, alleged that vehicles transporting chickens to Nagaland are intercepted at a gate set up at Khatkhati and authorised by the Taxes department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), on the pretext of license checking.
The union also alleged that one Ranjit Teron secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the KAAC, permitting him to operate a poultry wholesaler business at Lahorijan daily bazaar and Khatkhati bazaar.
And presently, only shipments associated with individuals possessing Ranjit Teron’s NOC or those who have joined hands with him, are allowed to proceed further, PUD stated.
[bsa_pro_ad_space id=1]Meanwhile, Aier also informed that the Commissioner of Police, Dimapur, had written to the Deputy Commissioner of Karbi Anglong on August 9, urging his counterpart to take appropriate measures. However, up until now, they have not received any response, he said.
Aier further alleged that the syndicate charges INR 20 to INR 30 per kilogram of live chicken being transported into Nagaland, which he said, will result in an increase in the wholesale price of live chicken in Assam to approximately INR 180, while the wholesale price in Nagaland will reach around INR 200. This will further escalate the price of live chicken in Dimapur to around INR 220 per kilogram.
The president disclosed that on a daily basis, approximately 20 to 25 poultry supply vehicles (around 45 to 50 thousand kilogram of chicken) make its way into Nagaland from Assam.
The PUD president said the ban will continue till the issue is resolved.
