DIMAPUR — The recent surge in negative feedback concerning night bazaars or carnivals in areas such as Dimapur, Niuland, and Chümoukedima stems from the association with gambling and open-air bars, Dimapur Commissioner of Police Kevithuto Sophie said on Thursday.

This correlation, he said, deters many citizens from participating in these events.

Inaugurating the 11th edition of the much-awaited Dimapur Night Carnival (DNC) at the Naga Shopping Arcade (Supermarket), the police officer acknowledged that the visionaries, who conceived the idea of hosting the night carnival some 11 years ago, did so with the notion of providing the citizens with a space for relaxation.

As such, he urged both the organisers and attendees to do away with any form of illegal activities, and encouraged them to create an environment where all citizens can participate comfortably with their families and friends, and unwind in a peaceful atmosphere.

Speaking further on the concerns, the commissioner emphasised the collective responsibility in creating a sensible atmosphere and urged everyone to actively contribute towards making the night carnival accessible to all citizens.

He said that the event should transcend mere games and food, rather serve as a platform to foster unity and friendship among the residents of Dimapur, Niuland and Chümoukedima, as well as the visitors who are coming to these areas during the festive season.

In an appeal to the gathering, Sophie suggested initiation of a peaceful and convenient atmosphere from the inaugural night onwards, while emphasising the importance of conveying a positive message to entice more people to join the carnival.

He also assured that the Dimapur police would maintain a secure environment in the carnival area to ensure that preventive measures against any illegal activities are in place.

The seven-day Dimapur Night Carnival, which is jointly organised by the Dimapur district administration and the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), will conclude on December 20.

The carnival will be held from 5 pm to 10 pm daily, showcasing approximately 100 stalls that will offer a varied range of items, catering to all age groups and families. The offerings include gaming, entertainment, and diverse ethnic cuisines.

To ensure safety of the visitors in the event of any unforeseen incidents, first aid and fire brigade services will be stationed.

The inaugural programme commenced with a welcome address by SDO Civil Dimapur, Yanthungbemo Kikon, a special musical performance by Arenla Akang, followed by entertainment session.
