Dimapur Naga Students’ Union accuses educational institutions of exploiting students
DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has condemned alleged exploitative practices by some educational institutions targeting students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
In a press release issued on Friday, the student body alleged these institutions prioritise profit over student well-being, citing instances of “forced scholarship applications through designated agencies which charge exorbitant fees”.
According to the DNSU, numerous complaints have been received about students being compelled to apply for scholarships through agencies, incurring fees of INR 500 or more, despite having the option to apply online or through cyber cafes at significantly lower costs (INR 150-200).
The union criticised this practice, stating that there is no government mandate that requires students to apply through such agencies.
Without naming any institutions, the DNSU urged relevant authorities to investigate the exploitative practices, which include alleged physical abuse, harassment, and excessive fees,
‘We also call on affluent parents to scrutinise these practices and avoid indiscriminately paying exorbitant fees, acknowledging that not all families have the same financial means,’ it said.
“Together, we can advocate for a fair and equitable education system that prioritises students’ well-being and academic success over institutional profit,” it added.
