DIMAPUR — Observing the widespread sale of 20-litre packaged drinking water containers without company labels, the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) has warned that the practice violates Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) regulations and poses potential health risks to consumers.
In a statement issued on Monday, the DMC reminded that such sales breach mandatory FSSAI requirements, which stipulate that packaged drinking water must display clear and verifiable information.
This includes the product name, FSSAI logo and licence number, BIS certification mark (ISI), manufacturer’s details, batch or lot number, manufacturing and expiry dates, net quantity, nutritional information, and a list of ingredients where applicable.
The council cautioned that the absence of these details prevents both quality verification and product traceability.
“Any consumable products or goods which do not have the FSSAI logo and License number must immediately cease being sold in the market,” the statement read.
The DMC announced that it will conduct regular checks within its jurisdiction to ensure compliance, warning that strict action will be taken against violators under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Distributors, suppliers, and retailers have been directed to immediately cease the sale and distribution of unlabelled 20-litre water containers or any consumable goods lacking proper packaging information.
Street vendors, food stalls, bakeries, and restaurants were also instructed to maintain hygiene standards in handling and serving food, including clean utensils, proper storage, and adherence to health and safety protocols.
The DMC urged the public to purchase only properly labelled packaged water and food products and to report any violations for prompt action.
