DIMAPUR — A 32-year-old man from Burma Camp in Dimapur, identified as Mhathung Lotha of Yimpang village, died on November 11 after he was allegedly assaulted by a couple and several others following a dispute two days earlier.
According to the victim’s wife, Noline, the incident occurred on November 9 at around 8 pm at Naga Colony in Burma Camp, when Mhathung and his friend, Chonben Kikon, confronted a couple—identified as Bokugha and his wife Alung—to ask why they were shouting.
The argument reportedly escalated into a physical assault involving the couple and other unidentified individuals.
Noline said that her husband and his friend sustained serious injuries and were hospitalised. Despite still being under treatment, Mhathung was allegedly asked to return home to “settle” the matter. When he went to meet the accused again, he was attacked a second time.
“They started looking for my husband, threatening us to produce him. Despite being hospitalised, he went to meet them, hoping to resolve the situation. However, as soon as he arrived, they attacked him from behind, assaulting his chest and head,” she recounted.

Noline alleged that the accused also forced Mhathung to sign an agreement—demanding INR 25,000 by 5 pm on November 10 and threatened to hold them at their “camp” if the money was not paid. When the family requested more time, they reportedly refused.
She said that the fine had been imposed personally by the accused and their family, not by any local authority. Her husband’s friend, Chonben, remains hospitalised and is unable to walk properly due to the injuries sustained in the assault, she said.
An FIR has been lodged by Noline at East Police Station, Dimapur, seeking urgent investigation and justice.
Chairman of Dimapur Nkonjan Yimpang Ekhung, Nzanbemo Patton, condemned the killing, calling it “inhuman and unacceptable.” He said that the union had decided not to retaliate but to trust law enforcement agencies to act according to the law.
“We’ve filed an FIR, and we expect the police to take action,” he said, adding that some of the accused have already been arrested, though the exact number remains unclear.
A family member, Mhonbemo Kikon, urged the public to condemn the incident and said the deceased was the sole breadwinner of his family. He demanded that the culprits’ family take responsibility for their actions.
