Dimapur holds review meeting on maternal death

Dimapur, April 10 (EMN): Office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dimapur, held an orientation review meeting on new guidelines of maternal death in its office chamber attended by the members of Maternal Death Review Committee on April 8.

A CMO press release stated that resource person, Dr. Rebecca, had reoriented the members on maternal death and the various common causes leading to maternal death in India. She stated that besides the medical causes, there are others contributing factors that leads to maternal death such as low socio-economic status, illiteracy, lack of transportation, early marriage, etc.

Dr. Rebecca stated that Maternal Death Review (MDR) was initiated in 2010 under National Health Mission to provide proper response mechanism on MDR. She added the same has been named as Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR).

The objective of MDSR was to strengthen the process and mechanism of maternal death review and to institute a system of conducting confidential review into maternal death.

Dr. Rebecca also highlighted on the roles and responsibilities of the facility-based MDSR committees. With proper reporting and analysis of any maternal death, suggestive corrective measures could be taken to improve the service delivery and the preparedness of the patients to avoid preventable maternal deaths. She stated that a single maternal death can throw light into various issues at community level during referral, facility level, district and state level and also provide an opportunity to act upon. She stated that taking action to avoid maternal death is the main objective of MDSR.

The orientation was chaired by Dr. K Vikato Kinimi, Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur. Dr. Antoly Suu, Deputy CMO, members of the Maternal Death Review Committees and facility-based Death Review Committee of District Hospital, Dimapur, have attended the meeting.
