DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has expressed hope of witnessing rapid progress in the commercial hub in the backdrop of the installation of a municipal body after nearly two decades.

In a press release issued on Thursday, the traders’ body stated that the forming of urban local bodies in Nagaland have given rise to “high expectations that the respective municipal and town councils will fulfil their assigned duties and responsibilities” in due earnest.

“At the outset, the Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry acknowledges the Nagaland government led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio for successfully implementing the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023, ushering a ray of hope for development of our much neglected cities and towns.

“DCCI is also optimistic that Dimapur city will now witness rapid progress and development with the installation of the DMC chairperson and his team,” it stated.

Dimapur being the commercial hub of the state, the DCCI argued, deserves better infrastructure “like good roads, uninterrupted power supply, streetlights, CCTV in important areas, timely disposal of garbage, good drainage systems, etc.”

According to the DCCI, the business community of Dimapur is one of the highest tax payers to the government of Nagaland. “Besides the business community also employs hundreds of local boys and girls in shopping malls and showrooms in and around Dimapur, thereby solving, at least to some extent, the unemployment problem in the state.

“However, the business community of Dimapur feels that it has been given a stepmotherly treatment as the government of the day has failed to provide basic infrastructure, amenities, security and enabling environment for trade and commerce to thrive in Dimapur,” it stated.

Also, the DCCI reminded the business community to strictly adhere to the Nov. 16, 2021, notification issued by the Municipal Affairs Department, which had stated that “collection of any kind of taxes/fees on items/goods that comes under the Goods & Services Tax (GST) regime shall be immediately stopped by all the Municipal and Town Councils across the state of Nagaland.”
