DIMAPUR — A send-off ceremony was organised to bid farewell to outgoing Dimapur Commissioner of Police, Kevithuto Sophie, at Rhododendron Hall, Police Complex, Chümoukedima on Thursday.
In his farewell speech, the Commissioner of Police remarked that on a “person’s final day,” nothing negative is usually said about them which, he noted, is a part of human nature. Sophie added that his work is driven by a sense of duty rather than a pursuit of recognition or fame.
It was learnt that Sophie will be taking charge as Inspector General of Police (IGP) in-charge of Armed BN-IR and Village Guards.
Sharing that that he always use to tell his officers that one should never fall short of their responsibilities, he emphasised that they should always fulfil their responsibilities to the best of their abilities, carrying out their duties with dedication and integrity, regardless of whether they receive recognition or not.

What matters most, he stressed, is the personal satisfaction of knowing they've done their best.
The outgoing police officer highlighted Dimapur's complexity as a city with diverse communities and backgrounds, emphasising the need for officials to work impartially, free from bias, favouritism, and nepotism that still plague society.

And while individuals alone may not be able to transform society entirely, each person can still make a positive impact in their own way. At the very least, if one can't contribute to the greater good, they should avoid actions that harm society, he said.
Additionally, Sophie credited the achievements of police to a collaborative effort, stressing that success isn’t solely due to the police force, but also the valuable contributions of the public, civil society organisations, NGOs, and student bodies.
He expressed hope that this “spirit of collaboration” will continue, as the time has come for everyone to stand up for societal change since the government alone cannot bring about transformation.

Meanwhile, Sophie expressed concern that a significant portion of business has shifted to the Assam border, leading to a substantial outflow of money from Nagaland to Assam.
This, he lamented, is detrimental to Nagas’ economy, and criticised the destructive tendencies within society, masked under the guise of Naga nationalism.
Underscoring the need for truth and integrity, he pointed out a troubling trend where success is prioritised over ethics, with people celebrating wealth regardless of its source.
Further, he acknowledged the media's dual role as both a problem-solver and problem-creator, emphasising the importance of accurate fact-reporting and constructive criticism. At the same time, he warned against sensationalised and judgmental reporting.
In his brief speech, DCP Niuland, Manish Bhartiya, highlighted that the Commissionerate's cosmopolitan nature and economic significance bring distinct challenges and complexities.
Bhartiya noted that annually, approximately 80% of Nagaland's cases are registered under the Dimapur Commissionerate. Highlighting the Commissioner of Police's achievements, he mentioned the seizure of NDPS goods worth INR 12 crore and the successful dismantling of key inter-state and intra-state narcotics supply chains.
Another key initiative of the commissionerate was the rollout of Auto Rickshaw Display card system, which has covered 6000 vehicles. Other notable achievements include the smooth conduct of the 2023 State Assembly elections, 2024 Lok Sabha elections, and 2024 ULB elections, he added.
The event also featured brief addresses from several dignitaries, including the deputy commissioners of Dimapur, Niuland, and Chümoukedima, as well as the Deputy Commissioner (Crime)/PRO Dimapur; representatives from the Naga Council Dimapur; Western Sumi Hoho; Dimapur District GB Association, Dimapur Muslim Council; and the Chakhroma Angami Kuda Union Dimapur; and the Business Association Nagaland.
