DoNER minister chairs meet to make NE India sports

  • IMPHAL — Manipur Governor, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with the Union Minister of Communications and Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya M Scindia, on Thursday chaired a meeting of the high-level task force on sports for the north eastern region to make NE India's sports hub at the conference hall of Raj Bhavan in Imphal.

  • The chief minister of Mizoram, deputy chief minister of Nagaland, additional chief secretary of Meghalaya and joint secretary of the Sports department joined the meeting via video conferencing, wherein various initiatives aimed at developing the region’s sports sector were discussed.

  • During the meeting, Scindia highlighted several areas that require special attention such as talent identification, training and coaching, establishment of coaching centres, promotion of public-private partnerships, infrastructure development and increased focus on women in sports.

  • Earlier, Manipur Governor Bhalla and Union Minister Scindia also chaired a meeting with officials from the DoNER ministry, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of various projects currently underway in Manipur.

  • During the meeting, the Union Minister also highlighted several areas that require focused attention for the development of the state. Those included handicrafts and handloom, sports, tourism, international trade, agriculture — particularly palm oil farming in the region, logistics and the development of national highways.

  • He also directed officials present at the meeting to accelerate the pace of key infrastructure projects such as universities, Manipur IT-SEZ, mental hospital, maternity and child hospital etc.

  • Sharing photographs of the meet on X, Union Minister Scindia wrote, “Progress for Manipur! Chaired a comprehensive review meeting with Hon’ble Governor Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla ji,@MDoNER_India officials and senior officials from the Manipur State Government. Assessed ongoing development schemes under @MDoNER_India and explored ways to further harness Manipur’s unique strengths in tourism, sports, handloom, and infrastructure development. Also reviewed the state’s comparative and competitive advantages to identify areas where Manipur can lead with innovation.”

  • The Manipur chief secretary, PK Singh; secretary to the Governor, Sumant Singh; secretary of DoNER; principal chief conservator of Forest, Arunag Bajpai; principal secretary, Arun Kumar Sinha and other senior officials attended the meeting.
