  • KOHIMA — In a bit to improve Aadhaar enrolment among children in the age of 0-5 years in the state, Aadhaar Enrolment Kits (AEK) were handed over to Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) for implementation of birth registration-based Aadhaar enrolment (BRBAE).

  • Commissioner of Nagaland, KS Anden Konyak, handed 24 each of smartphones and fingerprint scanners to Neidilhou Angami, director of Economics and Statistics, during a programme held at the commissioner’s office in Kohima on Wednesday.

  • Konyak, who is also the registrar for Aadhaar, Nagaland, said that Aadhaar enrolment centres are present in all the district headquarters along with operators.

  • The Directorate of Economics and Statistics, being one of the enrolment agencies, was handed with the kits. Other enrolment agencies in the state included departments of Rural Development, Health and Family Welfare and Social Welfare.

  • Informing that Aadhaar needs to be updated every ten years, he urged the people to keep in mind and promptly update before the expiry. He further informed that special camp on Aadhaar enrolment would be carried out in the districts of Wokha, Peren and Phek for wider coverage.

  • The UIDAI project manager of Nagaland, Bhaskar Sharma, acknowledged the state for becoming the first in the northeast to start Aadhaar-linked birth registration (ALBR), renamed as birth registration based Aadhaar enrolment. He, however, pointed out that the state is lagging behind ‘significantly’ in Aadhaar enrolment in the age group of 0-5 years, indicating less than 10 per cent enrolment. With Aadhaar kits being handed to the enrolment agency, he expressed hope that it would elevate the enrolment of that age group.

  • The director of Statistics and Economics, Neidilhou Angami, informed that one could make two certificates namely Aadhaar and birth certificates through the department as an enrolment agency. He, however, added that there are formal processes that need to be done and requested the UIDAI to ensure passage of the procedures so that they could start the registering process.

  • Appreciating the initiative, Worshim Ruiva Shimray, deputy director of UIDAI for Nagaland, Assam, and Mizoram, wished the mission a success and expressed hope that it would improve in enrolling people and Aadhaar updates.

The additional commissioner, L Jamithung Lotha, emphasised on the importance of bringing out accurate statistics for better implementation of Aadhaar enrolment. He further informed that placement of more operators are in the process.
