  • DIPHU — Member of Parliament (MP) of 6-Diphu (ST) Parliamentary Constituency and Executive Member (EM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Amarsing Tisso, on Friday said that the demand for Central Tribal Hill University from the central government can be achieved if all the social organisations, student bodies, political parties, and general public put up a united front.

  • The MP stated this while attending the 8th annual general fresher’s-cum social meet, 2025, of the Assam University Diphu Campus (AUDC) at Lumding Road. The meet was organised by the Assam University Diphu Campus Students’ Union (AUDCSU) to welcome the new students.

  • The meet was held at Rangsina Sarpo Open Air Auditorium at the University campus.

  • Last year in 2024, the Chief Executive Member (CEM), KAAC Tuliram Ronghang with his team including MP Amarsing Tisso and MLAs met the Union Education and Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, to discuss the establishment of a full-fledged central university at the existing Assam University, Diphu Campus.

  • “In 1989, an act was passed in Parliament for setting up of one central university in Assam. It was then in 1994 the university was set-up. It did not mention the place where the university shall be set-up.

  • “Ultimately it was set-up in Silchar, Barak Valley. Santosh Modhan Deb was the then Central Minister and in Assam Hiteshwar Saikia was the then Chief Minister. As the University was set-up in Barak Valley, it was like an embarrassment for the people of Brahmaputra valley,” Tisso said.

  • During that time, though having vast areas of land, the people of the hill districts of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao were deprived as they were only given a campus of Silchar University, he said.

  • The MP expressed optimism that a unified demand from social organisations, the student community, political parties, and the general public can help achieve the establishment of Central Tribal Hill University.

  • Further, the MP assured that an ambulance would be provided to the university. Additionally, he announced plans by KAAC to introduce electric buses (green buses) connecting Diphu town to the university campus, to facilitate transportation of students and faculty members, starting next year.

  • MLA Dorsing Ronghang, who attended the event as guest of honour, recalled the movement launched by the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) for a separate campus of Silchar University during his student days in 1991.

  • The AUDCSU also felicitated the gold medallists and Ph.D awardees of 2023-24.
