MOKOKCHUNG — In a comprehensive year-end report released by the DEF Mokokchung, the district recorded a total of 48 criminal cases in 2025, leading to the arrest of 67 individuals.
The statistics, covering the period from January 1 to December 31, highlight a relatively low incidence of violent crimes but underscore ongoing challenges with theft, vehicle accidents, and narcotics-related offenses.
The report, "Crime Statement 2025 of DEF MKG," breaks down crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and special/local laws, revealing a focus on property crimes and substance abuse enforcement.
Under IPC categories, 29 cases were registered, with theft topping the list at eight incidents, followed by vehicle accidents (seven) and cheating (three). Notably, there were no cases of murder or attempt to murder, marking a positive trend in curbing extreme violence.
Other IPC offenses included kidnapping and abduction (two), hurt (two), and single instances each of rape, extortion, outraging the modesty of a woman, and criminal trespass. An additional three cases fell under miscellaneous IPC provisions.

Special and local laws accounted for the remaining 19 cases, with the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act dominating at 14 registrations. This was followed by the Arms Act (two), and one each under the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and Information Technology (IT) Act.
A key highlight of the report is the extensive seizures under prohibition and narcotics laws, reflecting DEF's aggressive enforcement drives.
Under the NLTP Act, authorities handled 1 regular case alongside 51 criminal complaints, resulting in the confiscation of over 42,105 bottles of rum, 381 bottles of whisky, 16,692 cans of beer, 48 bottles of breezer, and 240 bottles of vodka. These operations led to 55 arrests, on crackdown of illegal liquor trade in the dry state.
NDPS seizures were equally significant, with 262.5 grams of brown sugar (heroin), 951 capsules of Spasmo Proxyvon, and assorted other substances including 4,240 tablets of alprazolam, 60 tablets of spasmonil, 39 tablets of nitrazepam, 189.86 grams of opium, and 111.34 grams of ganja. These efforts culminated in 21 arrests, in a fight against the persistent drug menace in the district.
Arms-related recoveries under the Arms Act involved two cases, yielding an M4 rifle, two country-made .32 pistols, one .22 pistol, and one country-made .22 rifle. Ammunition seized included 30 rounds of 5.56mm, six rounds of .32mm, and 20 rounds of .22mm, along with four magazines. Seven individuals were apprehended in connection with these incidents.
Analysts note that while the absence of homicides is commendable, the high number of NDPS cases—nearly 30% of total registrations—points to a growing concern over drug trafficking and abuse in Mokokchung.
Theft and vehicle accidents, comprising over a third of IPC cases, suggest urban pressures amid the district's development.
