Death toll in Manipur road mishap rises to 23

Imphal,March 28: The death toll of yesterday’s road accidents in Manipur (Makhan incident 12,Lairouching-1 and Irang 10) have risen to 23 after one more person each lost their lives on their way to hospital in Imphal on late Monday evening,reports said.
On Monday, at least 21 persons lost their lives during three different road accidents that took place near Makhan, Lairouching both under Senapati district and Irang in Tamenglong district. Ten persons including a woman lost their lives during passenger bus accident at a place between Makhan and Maram, about 90 km north of Imphal while another driver was killed at another accident near lairouching.Nine more persons including two ladies during a similar accident at Irang in Tamenglong district.Manipur government has also announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased victims, Rs 50,000 each to victims who sustained serious injuries and Rs 30,000 to victims who sustained simple injuries during Monday’s tragic road accidents in the state border state.
The Senapati district students association in the meantime claimed that the death toll of makhan incident rose to 13 while several other passengers are still under critical conditions. In a press release, General Secretary Newman Polah of SDSA said expressed grief and condoled the loss of lives. He also expressed serious concern over the authority’s failure to rectify and improve the road condition of the district particularly the highway. However its appreciates the move of Chakhumai villagers and 34 Assam Rifles for their commendable work in rescue operations of Makhan incident.
