NAGAS are not respecting even the dead during enrollment in electoral roll by failing deliberately to delete their names. This is also one of the reasons why the State could not produce accurate E-roll.
This was stated by visiting Electoral Roll Observer TC Sangtam while interacting with political parties, all tribal bodies, administrative officers and public leaders of Kiphire district on the ongoing Special Summary Revision 01/01/2014 as the qualifying date at the Kiphire Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall on Saturday.
Sangtam who is the Commissioner & Secretary of DYDA, said the State government along with Election department is doing its best to give accurate E-roll. However, multiple inclusion, mismatch of photography, inaccurate birth certificate and inclusion of illegal and migrant electorate were some of the factors because of which the State machinery could not conduct free and fair election in the State.
Sangtam also appealed to the political parties, all tribal bodies, student bodies and public leaders of the district to extend full cooperation to the district administration and its functionary to produce accurate E-roll to ensure clean election.
DC & District Election Officer, Kiphire Kesonyu Yhome, in his key note address, said the dominant objective of summery revision is to enhance the quality of the E-roll by ensuring that only eligible electorate were enrolled. This is the first and major step towards a free, fair and clean election, he said.
Kesonyu also said all political parties, tribal bodies, student bodies, NGOs and public leaders of the district have a crucial role to play in the quest for this exercise as the district election machinery is not the only institution responsible for the same.
In Kohima, Electoral Roll Observer for Kohima V. Shashank Shekhar held a meeting at DC’s conference hall, Kohima this afternoon where Deputy Commissioner Kohima W. Honje Konyak, ADC & ERO, Konia Asangla Imti and other administrative officers were present
The meeting deliberated on the issue that the overall EP Ratio (Electorate to Population Ratio) in Kohima district is around 50 percent which is low compared to the national average of about 60 percent. The reasons being that voters enroll in their native districts/villages, suo motu deletion of bogus voters, etc.
The matter of illegal immigrants was also discussed where the DC explained that far as Kohima is concerned the matter was checked during last revision also. The officers were directed to check carefully the E/Roll on this issue in accordance with the laid down instructions.
The DC also mentioned that there is sizeable population of doubtful citizens in Kohima. He felt the need to rationalize ILP criteria along with E/Roll criteria so that only genuine Indian citizens get ILP. The EPIC coverage in Kohima district is almost 100 percent, he further stated.
Shekhar, who is also Commissioner and Secretary to Governor, appreciated the efforts of the DC and other administrative officers to have a clean electoral roll.
