DDFA announces the Dimapur District Football League 2026 to revive football culture in Dimapur.
DIMAPUR — The Dimapur District Football Association (DDFA) is set to organise the Dimapur District Football League 2026-cum-Late Hejeto Ayemi Memorial Trophy from September 15 to October 5 at the Dimapur District Sports Council Stadium.
DDFA President Mughato Aye announced this during a press conference at the DDFA office in Dimapur on Sunday.
He said that the league was being organised to revive football activities in the district and provide young players with a platform to gain experience and develop their skills in accordance with All India Football Federation (AIFF) guidelines.
He mentioned that eight teams will participate in the league: Thahekhu Youth FC, Don Bosco Sports Academy, Kachari Sports Football Club, Dimapur United Sporting Club, East Dimapur Sumi Sports Association, Zeliangrong Village Youth Club, Indisen Football Club, and Akito FC.
Aye said the association had received support from Advisor Tovihoto Ayemi and his family, who have agreed to sponsor the tournament for 15 years. He described the support as an important step towards opening a new chapter in Dimapur football.
He said players in Dimapur had been eagerly awaiting a proper league, noting that open tournaments and league competitions offered different opportunities to players. Unlike knockout tournaments, a league would allow players to play multiple matches and gain experience even after suffering a defeat.
The competition will feature league champions and playoffs. The opening programme is scheduled for 2:30 pm on September 15, with entry free for spectators on the opening day.
Aye appealed to football enthusiasts in Dimapur and across Nagaland to attend the matches and encourage the participating players.
He said the DDFA also aims to restore Dimapur’s position as a football powerhouse, noting that the district had enjoyed a strong football culture before its division into three districts.
The association also informed that regular entry tickets would be priced at a minimum of INR 20, and to expand access to the tournament, DDFA has partnered with the local sports digital platform “Sports Matrix”. The platform will provide live updates and match highlights, including information on goals, cards and match officials, allowing football enthusiasts who cannot attend the games to follow the tournament online.
Meanwhile, the DDFA president said two coaches had been appointed to select players for the Dimapur district team for the upcoming Dr. T Ao Trophy, scheduled to be held in Mokokchung from October 12.
The selectors will attend all league matches and shortlist 25 to 30 players. Following a one-week coaching camp, the final 20 players will be selected to represent Dimapur district at the Dr. T Ao Trophy.
The total prize money for the league and championship is INR 4.80 lakh, and in addition, Nili Nissan will sponsor the Man of the Match award for every game. The award will comprise a certificate and cash prize.
