Dimapur, Sep. 4 (EMN): The deputy commissioner (DC) of Noklak, Reny Wilfred, has directed the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) to initiate necessary steps to improve the water source and install filtration mechanism under available provision.

The DC issued the directive after visiting the PHED water sources supplied to Noklak town on September 2. He was accompanied by officials from the administration, PHED, DBs and representatives from the students’ union and village council, a DIPR report stated on Thursday.

The visit was necessitated upon receiving numerous concerns raised by people from all walks of life regarding the poor quality of water supply to Noklak town and its surrounding villages, which causes a lot of water borne diseases, it informed.

On inspecting the spot and surrounding areas, the DC and his team found out that the water source is being contaminated by the excrement and urine of mithuns and wild animals that come for drinking water.

It was also observed that the water source, which is directly connected to the streams, is supplied to the citizens of Noklak town without any proper water purification system and filtration tanks.

One water source is located at a distance of more than 3 km away from Noklak town, while the other water source is located approximately 12 km away from the town and prone to frequent damage, particular during monsoon.

The team observed that there is an urgent need for fencing facilities at the water sources as well as a filtration tanks.
