African Swine Fever outbreak in Kohima prompts infected and surveillance zones with strict curbs on pig movement and pork trade

DIMAPUR — Deputy Commissioner of Kohima, B Henok Buchem, has issued an order declaring infected and surveillance zones following the confirmation of an African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak at T Khel Model village, Khikha colony, under Kohima district.
According to a DIPR report, the outbreak was confirmed on June 11 through a laboratory test conducted by the Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer, Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
The district administration has declared T Khel Model village, Khikha colony and Thizama village as the infected zone, covering a one-kilometre radius from the affected premises. A surveillance zone extending up to 10 kilometres has also been notified.

To contain the spread of the disease, authorities have imposed a complete ban on the import, export and movement of live pigs and pork products within, into or out of the infected and surveillance zones.
All pork markets and butchery shops within the designated areas will remain closed until further notice.
Pig farmers have been directed to restrict visitors, regularly disinfect farm premises and immediately report any unusual illness or deaths among pigs to the Veterinary department.
The public has also been urged to report suspected pig deaths and avoid purchasing or consuming meat from unknown sources.
The order stated that pig carcasses must be disposed of through safe burial as per official protocols, while dumping carcasses in open areas or water bodies is strictly prohibited.
Violators will face legal action under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009, and other relevant laws, the order stated.
