DIMAPUR — Deputy Commissioner of Chümoukedima, Polan John, chaired a meeting of the District Water & Sanitation Mission (DWSM) on November 28 at the DC’s conference room, Chümoukedima, to assess and discuss on the ongoing implementation of two major national flagship programmes — Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) Phase-II and the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) — within the district.
During the meeting, a detailed PowerPoint presentation was presented by SDO, PHED, Lichonthung Patton, highlighting the current status of Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) 2.0 and Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), under Chümoukedima district and the work carried out by the department under the two schemes, a DIPR report stated.
Executive Engineer, PHED (Rural), Nerie-e Nisa said that the ‘Hamara Shauchalay, Hamara Bhavishya’ campaign was launched on World Toilet Day (November 19) on the theme ‘Sanitation in a changing world,’ and the tagline ‘We will always need the toilet’ and will culminate on December 10, 2025.
The objective of the campaign, she said, is to highlight the ongoing necessity of toilets for sanitation, disease prevention, and environmental cleanliness, especially as climate change and population growth increase pressure on existing sanitation systems.

Matters related to open defecation, solid and liquid waste management, the quality of groundwater resources, and village-level sanitation activities, along with measures to address these issues, were thoroughly deliberated during the meeting.
The deputy commissioner urged all the departmental representatives to work in close coordination and to uphold the responsibilities assigned to them under the DWSM framework, and encouraged the members to strengthen monitoring mechanisms and extend necessary support to rural bodies for the effective implementation of the schemes.
John stressed that both SBM-G Phase-II and JJM are crucial to improving the quality of life in rural communities and require active engagement from all stakeholders.
He directed the PHED and Water Resources departments to conduct a scientific study on the water quality of the Chathe River and to submit a report on the adverse impact of riverbed mining on its water quality.
