DIMAPUR — The Dimapur Bengali Samaj (DBS), continuing with its annual tradition before the ‘Durga Puja’, on Sunday distributed clothes among the underprivileged womenfolk through a distribution programme held at Ram Thakur Mandir, Railway Colony Dimapur.

Speaking on the occasion, the president of DBS, advocate K K Paul, said that Durga Puja, besides its religious significance, is a time for merrymaking, and buying new clothes is part of it.

However, he said, there are people who cannot afford new clothes during the festival, and the objective of the initiative is to identify them and do a bit from the side of the samaj to make them happy.

He also mentioned that it is one of the initiatives of the samaj and it also is involved in educational initiatives, helping people in treatments, relief works, etc. He added that DBS always remains ready to reach out to people in need.

Around 300 sarees were distributed among the people on Sunday.

Every year, a month before the puja, the DBS volunteers are tasked with visiting different localities in Dimapur to identify people who can be beneficiaries, and a list is prepared. The beneficiaries are then invited to a designated place, like the Ram Thakur Mandir this year, and the clothes are distributed.

The first such event was organised in 2011.

Later, Paul told Easter Mirror that those who were unable to be there in person for the distribution programme could still get their clothes by approaching the mandir.

The distribution programme was managed, coordinated, and attended by advocate Swapan Paul, Pradip Barman, Gautam Sarkar, Champak Sen, A Bhattacharjee, Tapan Saha, N Baruah, R M Bagchi, Dr. R Acharjee, Bishnu Dey, Biplab Paul, and others.

Presidents and members of Dimapur Bengali Students’ Union and Dimapur Hindu Seva Samiti were also present at the event.
