Dimapur, June 5 (EMN): Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) on Sunday lauded the state government for removing intrastate check gates stating that this step would not only curb illegal taxation but enable the growth of the economy of the state.
DAYO also urged local entrepreneurs to take control of the economy “as we compete in an atmosphere of free trade and enterprise”. It said that DAYO was against monopoly or syndicate practices that will hinder new and young entrepreneurs to venture into business.
DAYO has been operating the helpline number 8974851911 with monitoring members to respond to genuine grievances, it stated.
It further said that the government should not succumb to pressure groups “that tries to confuse the people for their ends”.
“If any genuine modification or changes has to be made in the notification, appropriate stakeholders especially business and transport associations should be taken into confidence. In fact, all leaders from various tribal apex bodies and various communities of Dimapur should be consulted for any review,” it read.
DAYO further reiterated its stand on “One Government, One Tax” to eradicate unabated taxation.
“As long as we are under the Constitution of India we should abide by the GST Act of 2017 that implemented ‘One Nation, One Tax,” it added.
Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) meanwhile expressed shock to note that some organisations had appealed to reconsider blanket ban on tax levied by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC).
NVCO, in a separate statement on Sunday, said that ‘reconsideration of one district would paralyse all other districts’ and also violate the state government’s standing order, which would amount to contempt of Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench order.
NVCO reminded that in the past, various transport unions/associations had called chakka jhum/strike not to enter Dimapur due to illegal tax/cash collection. It said that citizen of Dimapur must not forget that Dimapur is the commercial hut and gateway to Nagaland when it comes to bringing essential and non-essential commodities, building materials, etc, from outside the state. ‘Market price of other district headquarters is determined from Dimapur. Hence, there are so many genuine reasons not to reconsider DMC tax’, it read.
NVCO further urged the civil societies, tribal hohos, churches, students, youth , women organisations, business community, etc, ‘to remain strong’ to not allow the government to reconsider any case in order to bring an end to the menace of illegal taxation in the state.
‘We are all aware that several associations/various groups/unions/organisations besides police at check-gates and municipal/town councils are all anxiously looking for reconsideration on tax or illegal collection as it has been practiced for the last several decades,’ it read.
NVCO stated that it was encouraged to see reports of cases being registered for indulging in illegal cash collection. It said that the state machinery had come up with a well equipped plan to tackle the issue of illegal collection of taxes.
‘This culture must continue not only on highways and check-gates but also in public sectors,’ it added.
