DIMAPUR —The Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) has lauded the Dimapur Police and its Assam counterpart for the arrest of Bahurudin, the alleged north-east drug kingpin and his associates from Sonitpur, Assam, on March 23.

In a press release, the DAYO also commended the efficiency of the Nagaland Police and their zeal to root out the menace of drugs from Nagaland under the leadership of DGP Nagaland Rupin Sharma.

Expressing shock that a leader of a particular community, who is also the president of the New Market Jame Masjid Committee and a prominent business figure in Nagaland, was arrested, the youth organisation insisted that the accused should be immediately suspended from any responsible post without any excuse.

“DAYO as a social organisation has always stood for and propagated inter-communal harmony in Dimapur and Nagaland as a whole. The drug menace has had a crippling effect on Naga society for decades. With the arrest of the kingpin, DAYO urges the police and administration for further scrutiny of the said masjid committee and its affiliated unions,” the release stated.

Affirming that it will not remain a mute spectator while the lives of youths and students are destroyed by drugs, the DAYO called upon all Naga youth organisations to stand united for any eventualities in the common fight against drugs.

The organisation further appealed to the authority concerned to ensure that the culprits are given befitting punishment as per the law of the land.

NMA: The Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA) has also lauded the collaborative efforts of the Nagaland Police and Assam Police in apprehending the drug kingpin and his associates.

In a statement, the NMA appealed for a thorough investigation and requested protection from any interference that could derail the process.

The NMA emphasised that Nagaland has been grappling with the drug menace and underscored the need for collective efforts to empower all stakeholders to actively participate and ensure the protection of homes, children, families, and society.

Further, it has called for a unified voice to address the proactive approach needed to combat the drug menace in the state.

WSH: The Western Sumi Hoho (WSH) expressed dismay in a statement over the fact that Bahurudin held a position of authority as the president of the New Market Jame Masjid Committee.

It emphasised that the repercussions of his actions have had a devastating impact on numerous young lives, a situation it described as ‘unimaginable’.

It demanded that he be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, stating that it is crucial that justice be served to prevent such individuals from continuing to harm innocent people.

The WSH also commended DGP Nagaland “for his strong stance against drug abuse” as well as Kevithuto Sophie, commissioner of police for the prompt and efficient efforts in capturing the perpetrator.

“Their dedication to eradicating the drug trade is crucial in protecting the community from further harm,” it said.
