DIMAPUR — Children’s Parliament Initiative, under the aegis of Development Association of Nagaland (DAN), organised a district-level advocacy and strategy development workshop-cum-general election and assembly of district-level children’s parliament on August 11 at DAN Training Centre.

Addressing the gathering, EAC of Seithekema, Seyiekhrietuo, stated that children who are involved in the children’s parliament are provided with a rare opportunity to come forward and have their opinions heard and ensured that their rights are respected not only by the schools but also by heads of various government departments.

“It will be a privilege for the district administration if the members of the children’s parliament visit the office and see how it functions,” a press release issued by DAN quoted Seyiekhrietuo as saying.

He also expressed concern about the increasing number of drug-related cases, especially among the students. He, therefore, urged the youngsters to come together and work out strategies to tackle the issue for a better future.

The guest speakers included Dr. Reyosalu Lase Vizo, who serves as the district nodal officer of District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC). He discussed the topic of ‘Involvement of Children with DTCC in Controlling Tobacco Consumption among Minors in the District.’ Additionally, Dr. Tiamenla Phom, the additional deputy commissioner of police (women and juvenile), addressed the subject of ‘Engaging Children in Protecting Child Rights in the Context of Cybercrime.’ Lastly, Loza Kape, a member of the child welfare committee, presented on the ‘Collaborative Role of Children with the Child Welfare Committee in Safeguarding Child Rights.’

It stated that Jiji Joseph, DAN senior programme officer, shared the activities of the organisation and the strategy for district-level children’s parliament.

Stakeholders and children representatives from fifteen children’s parliaments attended the programme.
