DAN conducts children’s parliament strategy meeting at Chekiye

DIMAPUR — The Children’s Parliament Initiative II, under the aegis of the Development Association of Nagaland (DAN), convened a district-level advocacy and strategy development meeting with stakeholders alongside the general election and assembly of the district-level children’s parliament on April 29 at the DAN Training Centre, Chekiye.

As per a press release, the event featured guest speakers including Alomi Sumi, coordinator of Child Helpline and the District Child Protection Unit, and Aghali Swu, an environmental engineer from the Nagaland Pollution Control Board.

Speaking at the event, Alomi discussed the scope and strategy for establishing a district-level children’s parliament to collaborate with the District Child Protection Unit/Child Helpline to ensure the safety and security of children in the district. Swu enlightened the participants by discussing environmental issues and the role of children in waste management, as well as proposing solutions and measures to tackle these environmental issues.

The release mentioned that Peteneizo Zao, the mentor of the children’s parliament from St. Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Padumpukhri, chaired the programme. Rev. Sr. Shinet, vice-principal of Carmel Higher Secondary School, Chekiye, led the invocation prayer. Rev. Fr. Sajan Joseph, director of DAN, delivered the welcome address and also shared about the strategy development of the children’s parliament with the stakeholders. Jiji Joseph, senior programme officer at DAN, delivered the concluding remarks and vote of thanks.

The event also had participation from differently-abled children from Angel Home. A total of 54 attendees were present. Following the programme, the general election and assembly of the district-level children’s parliament took place.

Representatives from various children’s parliaments participated in this event and Vilhouvonuo from Saint John’s School, Diphupar B, was elected as the prime minister of the district-level children’s parliament.
