Developer CD Projekt Red announced on Wednesday that its action role-playing video game, Cyberpunk 2077, has sold more than 20 million copies. Launched in 2020, the game took less than two years to reach the impressive milestone.

CD Projekt Red took to Twitter to announce the achievement. The company wrote, “Over 20 million cyberpunks have been roaming the streets of Night City—partying with Jackie and getting to know Johnny, driving around with Panam and diving with Judy, hanging out with River and listening to Kerry’s songs. Thank you and we hope to see you all in the Afterlife!”

The Afterlife that the company mentions in the tweet refers to a club located on the southern strip of Night City’s Watson district.

The developer initially received a huge backlash from the community for launching an unpolished and bug-ridden game in 2020. The company has since made amends with constant updates and has improved the game in all facets including gameplay, graphics and combat mechanics. The game has seen a steady growth in concurrent players and its recent resurgence can be attributed to the release of the Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime on Netflix and the release of update 1.6.

CD Projekt recently shared that over a million players have jumped into Night City every day for the past week. Fans are also excited about the announcement of Phantom Liberty, the game’s upcoming major DLC expansion.

Cyberpunk 2077 surpassing the 20 million sales mark is impressive, however, it is still a long way off from reaching the numbers set by games like Minecraft (238 million copies sold) and Grand Theft Auto 5 (170 million copies sold).

It remains to be seen whether Phantom Liberty will take Cyberpunk 2077 to newer heights, however, looking at the reception of Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime, it is safe to assume that a lot of people love the Cyberpunk universe. Perhaps, Cyberpunk 2077 is not done yet and Night City has yet to show its true potential. As always, we will be there when that happens.
