Dimapur, June 14 (EMN): Chizami Women Society (CWS) has vehemently condemned the physical assault meted out o an innocent and defenceless woman farmer belonging to Chizami village allegedly by a group of men from Thetsumi village on June 13 at Chuti in Chizami village while she and her family members were working in the paddy field.

The incident happened following receipt of a phone call from a family member informing about disturbances in other fields, stated an update from CWS. It alleged that the men from Thetsumi village forcibly threw their baskets and reprimanded them for cultivating the fields.

It claimed that the victim was punched by a man when she tried to call her family on mobile phone. It added that her mobile phone was thrown away.

It, however, stated that she and her friends managed to escape. It also accused the men of destroying paddy saplings in the nursery beds, cutting baskets into pieces and destroying terrace field bunds and irrigation canals.

The society claimed that she was mentally and emotionally traumatised and physically wounded. On reaching home, she was admitted to a community health centre in Chizami as her condition worsened.

While condemning the incident, the society has appealed to the law enforcement agencies to investigate the assault on its members with utmost urgency, book the perpetrators and prosecute them as per the existing laws in the interest of justice. It also denounced the acts of burning down huts and destroying the crops.

It has further sought thorough investigation into the wanton destruction and due compensation be given to the affected farmers.
