DIMAPUR — The ‘Stress Awareness Week’ organised by Carl Rogers Institute of Mental Health and School Counselling (CRIMHSC) in collaboration with the Directorate of State & Family Welfare, National Mental Health Programme, got underway in Kohima on Monday.

The first programme was held at Mt. Hermon Hr. Sec. School where Anupam Kohli, a resource person from Rogers Institute, spoke to the teachers and Kezhazolie Mere, chairman of the institute, spoke to the students on how to manage stress, Rogers Institute informed in an update.

Kezhazolie spoke in detail about the different types of stress, different physical symptoms of stress and how to manage stress in three areas including mind, body and action.

He also mentioned about a few exercises that the one can take up such as breathing exercises, cognitive reframing and talking to a friend or a therapist.

Anupam shared with the teachers that at every stage of life, a person experiences certain amount of stress.

“Most people say stress is bad instead of good; however stress can both be good and bad. Stress drives us to do something good, it motivates us to work harder as long as we know how to manage it,” Anupam.

She also mentioned about two ways to take time out: one is the healthy “mindless me-time,” which includes things to do with pleasurable activities that helps one feel completely relaxed, and the second is the “mindful me-time” including introspection. Both the resource persons also mentioned about two types of stresses – ‘eustress,’ a positive stress, and ‘distress,’ which if unmanaged and uncontrolled leads to different problems.
