DIMAPUR — The chorus of dissent against implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) is growing louder in Nagaland with the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) also taking the decision to oppose UCC “in letter and spirit.”

In a representation to the Member Secretary, Law Commission of India, the CPO stated that Chakhesang is a major tribe in Nagaland, with the tribe having its own distinct language, religion, culture and traditional and customary practices.

“The traditional and customary practices of our inheritance, adoption and succession remain sacrosanct and those practices do not conflict with any of the modern adjudication laws in view of our religious or social practices of the Nagas being enshrined in Art 371 (A) (a) (ii) & (iii),” CPO said.

The representation mentioned that understanding and acknowledging the diverse historical, traditional and cultural realities, the founders of the nation and particularly the framers of the Constitution of India, ensured the recognition of every diverse segment and the protection of their religion, language, customary law and their social practices and had it enshrined in Article 25 of the Constitution of India.

“India is in its 76th year of Independence, and we believe that the integrity of India was never threatened by accommodation of the diversities in the Constitution. As a matter of fact, as long as the religious and ethnic minorities feel secured by the constitutional protections, the national integrity remains firm.

“Yet, the moment the security of the minor communities is jeopardised, there will be social and political unrest in the country. The Hindus being 79.8%, it tends to marginalise the minorities with majoritarianism bullies as of today in the name of strengthening the unity of the nation.” CPO maintained.

The tribal organisation also pointed out that the “ongoing ethnic clash between the majority Meiteis undertaking ethnic cleansing against the minority Kukis” has tarnished the image of BJP in particular and of India in general.

“At this rate of intolerance of the religious majority against the religious minority and when such superiority complex is to be legalised in the camouflage of UCC, and under the strength of such law, if UCC is imposed on the minorities, we will be compelled to react. The consequence will be social unrest,” the representation stated.
