CPI attacks Rajnath Singh over AFSPA remark

Communist Party of India (CPI) Manipur unit today attacked the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre for allegedly cheating the people of Manipur on the issue of AFSPA, saying the saffron party has forgotten about promises made in its election manifesto.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) promised the people to repeal Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, AFSPA from Manipur in its manifesto published for the recent Lok Sabha polls, but Home Minister Rajnath Singh had recently asserted that the Government would not revoke the Act, state CPI executive member N Mangi told media at Irawat Bhawan.
Rajnath Singh’s assertion on importance of AFSPA was a direct challenge to the people of the region, Mangi claimed, saying the Jeevan Reddy Committee has already recommended revoking the Act.
Mangi, a former minister, insisted that the Union Home Minister’s statement clearly shows the Government of India wants killing more people in the state on the pretext of countering insurgency.
He also accused the BJP Government at the Centre of trying to put an end to NREGS Act introduced by the Congress-led UPA regime with the support of CPI.
Mangi said his party will submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Manipur visit on November 30.
He said Modi will be urged to take steps to provide to the people benefits of multi-crore Khuga Dam, Dolaithabi Dam and Thoubal Dam in the memorandum.
