Dimapur, May 8 (EMN): Chumoukedima Village Council in Dimapur district, has taken strong note that contractors of the ongoing four-lane highway construction are still dumping debris into Chathe river and polluting it.

The council issued a press release on Wednesday stating displeasure. It has been reported that the constructors are ‘heedlessly continuing’ to dump debris, which has polluted the river; and the public is being made to suffer, the press release stated.

The press release read: ‘The Chümoukedima Village Council expresses its extreme displeasure for the lackadaisical manner in which the works are being carried out, which has resulted in totally polluting the river water and creating health hazards to the citizens who are basically dependent on the river and is also causing serious ecological impact on the pristine river.’

The council took ‘serious exception’ of the ‘haphazard practices’ of the construction companies, and warned that the village authority “will not tolerate the needless suffering meted out to its people or allow the defacement of its environment at the hands of unmindful construction companies.”

The council has appealed to the Dimapur district administration to take cognizance of the matter, and to issue an order to ban or restrict dumping of debris into Chathe River (Khuokhi River Bridge to Chathe River at the Patkai Christian College junction) by any company or contractors who are engaged in the construction of the four-lane highway.
