[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he mark-scoring oriented education system has been prevailing for a long time now. This system which gives too much emphasis on mark-scoring of students has a number of negative effects. Such practice has deviated from the very purpose of education. It is indeed an unnecessary exercise. It is a long felt need of the people to change the system to a value-oriented education system. One cannot help but wonders why such a faulty system is yet to be rectified by the think-tanks of the Human Resource Development (HRD).
Here, we do not ask for the mark-scoring system to be done away. We want to see that the system does not bring the students to a situation where they have to experience futile exercises. We also don’t mean to say the system has been static. We do witness changes of education system from time to time but those changes are more to do with technical aspect. And that these changes have not hit the nail on the head and it will continue to miss its aim as long as the concerned authorities do not employ ‘think out of the box’ approach.Today, this prevailing system has given rise to a new trend where the parents have to dole out extra expenditure for coaching classes of their wards. It has become a must-practice. We cannot blame these organized tuition centres for their very existence. The system has created a situation where students are compelled to seek for extra classes and hence the mushrooming of these private coaching centres.
Cases of stress among the students are rising. There have been numerous reports of suicide incidents in the media. The system has failed to cheer up the students. The system has given room to make the demarcation line between the haves and have-nots more distinct. The education system is punishing the poor section of the people. Is education only for the rich? When will the think-tanks in the HRD add some charms to the education system?
