DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 24

Construction of buildings ‘or any project’ in Nagaland are largely unsafe and lack contemporary innovations which only innovative engineering expertise can offer, a member of the Nagaland State Quality Control Board has said. Member of the board LT Konyak said today that quality of constructions – from buildings to roads – depend on the quality of the officers, constructors and the makers. He has attributed it to incompetence and apathy such as unsystematic development, preparing DPRs without spot verifications or ‘verifying’ projects without actually verifying the specifications.
The board member, also former deputy commissioner of Mon district, was speaking during the Mon District Planning & Development Board held on October 22 in Mon.
LT Konyak said that the minds entrusted with infrastructure should to start imbibing ‘workmanship’ and ensure quality. Emphasizing on the urgent need of engineers’ supervision for quality construction of any projects, he said any construction done on the advice of the civil engineers are ‘safe’, economical and durable, where as architecture is for convenience and beauty.
‘Many beautiful buildings in the state are constructed without assistance of the engineers and lacks earthquake resistance,’ he said. The board member also reminded that the lack of systematic development and giving less priority to the existing roads, buildings, etc preparing DPR without spot verifications and verification of projects without verifying the specification, are some of the factors responsible for poor quality construction.
Exhorting the officers, he said that the quality of workmanship depends on the quality of the officers and urged them to create awareness among the people on quality construction of both private and public properties.
The board member that although Nagaland has made tremendous achievement in the field of development during the past 50 years of statehood, the roads and buildings in the state are in deteriorating conditions due to poor workmanship and lack of quality construction of roads and buildings. The role of the board was to suggest and advise the state Government for improvement of workmanships in all developmental works undertaken by the Government as well as public undertaking, to inquire and investigate on construction of projects and supply of materials, public awareness for maintenance of quality works, etc.
“The officers are like a book; they are read and observed by the people about their activities,” he said. He also lamented that many officers neglect to read the enforcement of the rule of laws saying, “We never read and utilize the Nagaland code.”
