Congress’ Supongmeren Jamir gets 53% of votes in Nagaland

KOHIMA — Almost 53 per cent of the 7,59,150 valid votes cast for Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha seat went to S Supongmeren Jamir of the Congress, who received 4,01,951 votes.

Dr. Chumben Murry from the NDPP and PDA consensus candidate, got 3,50,967 votes, leading to a winning margin of 50,984 votes in Jamir’s favour. Independent candidate Hayithung Tungoe Lotha secured 6,232 votes.

Commissioner and Returning Officer for Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency, Sushil Kumar, disclosed these figures during a press briefing in Kohima following the conclusion of vote counting for the Lok Sabha election on Tuesday evening.

He specified that out of the 60 assembly constituencies in Nagaland, only 40 had participated, with 20 constituencies in the eastern districts abstaining due to their demand for Frontier Nagaland.

Kumar shared that a total of 6,035 votes were cast via postal ballots, with 3,642 being deemed valid and 2,393 being considered invalid or rejected.

Out of the valid votes, Jamir received 2,439, Murry received 895, and Tungoe received 182. Furthermore, NOTA received 126 votes.

During the counting, which took place in all districts, a total of 7.63 lakh votes were counted, consisting of both valid and invalid ones as well as NOTA votes. He disclosed that there were 1,646 votes for NOTA.

Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland, Vyasan R, who also addressed the press, expressed satisfaction with the successful conclusion of the vote counting process, labelling it the “finale” of the Lok Sabha election.

He highlighted the effective communication of the Election Commission of India’s instructions since the announcement of the election on March 16 and commended the collaborative efforts of all involved parties in conducting the poll.
