Congress awaits Manipur govt’s consent for yatra
IMPHAL — General Secretary of AICC, KC Venugopal, arrived in Imphal on Monday to oversee the preparatory works ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Manipur to Mumbai’ ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ which is scheduled to kick off on January 14.
Soon after his arrival at Imphal international airport, the AICC leader along with president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) K Meghachandra drove to Hafta Kangjeibung, a popular ground for holding public rallies and meeting, at Palace Gate in Imphal East district.
There, Venugopal met former chief minister Okram Ibobi and CWC member Gaikhangam and jointly inspected the site for the yatra.
Earlier, the MPCC office bearers led by its president and AICC’s Manipur state in-charge Girish Chodankar, called on chief secretary Veenit Joshi at the latter’s office in Imphal and sought permission for the yatra.
“We came here to have a preparatory meeting after the successful planning of Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra which is going to start from January 14,” he said.
“Now this Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra we’re doing from Manipur to Mumbai by travelling 6500 km. This is not a political yatra. This yatra is to make a big canvas for seeking Nyay for the poor, for women, for youth, for farmers and people from other walks of life. We’re starting Yatra from here because we think Manipur needs justice,” he added.
Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra is scheduled to begin from Imphal on January 14 and will pass through 15 states before culminating in Mumbai, covering 6700km in 66 days. This yatra will cover 110 districts, 100 Lok Sabha seats and 337 assembly seats.
