  • DIMAPUR — The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) has suspended its proposed indefinite shutter-down of businesses across several districts of Nagaland following a government invitation to dialogue.

  • The confederation issued this information in the form of a press statement on Wednesday. The CNCCI, along with nine aggrieved district chambers of commerce, had threatened the action citing government inaction on their demand for nominee representation in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).

  • The proposed shutdown, initially scheduled for April 24, was a response to what the CNCCI described as "continued government apathy" towards their long-standing demand.

  • However, a high-level meeting was convened at the directive of the chief minister, where representatives from the CNCCI and all nine affected district chambers participated.

  • During the discussions, the CNCCI firmly reiterated their demand for nominee representation in ULBs, emphasising its vital importance in safeguarding the interests of both the business community and consumers.

  • “During the deliberation, CNCCI and the aggrieved district chambers clearly reiterated that the demand for nominee representation in ULBs is non-negotiable, as it is essential to protect the interests of the business community and consumers alike. The government, acknowledging the concerns raised, has requested a period of two weeks to address the matter.

  • “Based on mutual trust and in the larger interest for dialogue, the CNCCI has decided to keep the proposed indefinite voluntary shutter down—originally scheduled for the 24th of April—in abeyance for a period of two weeks. We earnestly hope and anticipate that the government will act responsibly and resolve the issue within the stipulated time frame,” it stated.

  • Meanwhile, all 17 district presidents and executive members of CNCCI have been directed to attend an executive council meeting scheduled for April 25 at the CNCCI headquarters in Dimapur.
