Concern for ‘lazy’ students, excessive social media mark Lakhuti session

Dependence on social media and the social concerns of unproductive youths and students must be done away with, students at a town in Wokha were told recently. Various speakers urged the students to have a dream with goals and execute it with commitment and dedication, for ‘change must come from them to bringing change to the people and society under the guidance of parents, teachers and mentors.’ The 68th general session of the Lakhuti Students’ Union was conducted on December 31 at Lakhuti village’s local ground, in Wokha district. The event was conducted with the theme “Think, execute and win,” a press release from the organisers informed. O Elhibemo Yanthan, general manager of the Nagaland State Transport was the special guest of the programme; R Daniel Yanthan, retired assistant director of the department of School Education was the guest of honour; and Dory Yanthan, district fishery officer was the speaker of the theme, the updates stated. In his address to the gathering, the special guest O Elhibemo Yanthan was quoted as having said that “As a student one has to undergo many hurdles, pain and obstacles with many circumstances however as time progress and we realize ourselves we get motivated.” He advised the students to ‘be cautious and think beyond in every step they leap.’ Yanthan also exhorted the students from the life stories of hardships, pain and humiliation encountered by Nelson Mandela. As students, the speaker said, change must come from them to bringing change to the people and society under the guidance of parents, teachers and mentors. The speaker for the theme, Dory Yanthan urged the students to pursue and realize their dreams and ‘execute it with an open heart accepting all circumstances.’ She expressed concern that students these days were ‘comfortably idle in their own position without having a dream to execute.’ This is ‘very disheartening and never finds the way to strive for excellence,’ the updates stated. “She advised the students to have a hunger for their dreams believing in themselves in hand believing in change. She further encouraged the students to have a dream with goals and execute it with commitment and dedication to getting better,” the press release stated. A special prayer seeking blessings from God was offered by Rev. Ezanbemo Odyuo, pastor of the Lakhuti Baptist Church. The programme has a second session, which was hosted by Mhao Kikon. In the second session, the guest of honour R Daniel Yanthan talked to the gathering. He emphasised on the importance of ‘pen,’ the updates stated. “He advised the students to utilize the pen as a weapon making the best use of it instead of spending their time luxuriously in social media world. He also encouraged the students to not only give it a try but to make it an accomplishment and never leave it for tomorrow,” the press release stated. A feature of the event was literary competition. Competitions in extempore speech and a debate were also held. Burnice Yanthan was adjudged the winner of the extempore speech competition, while Longtsubeni Humtsoe was adjudged the best debater. Certificates of merit and awards were also given to successful candidates of the 2018 Nagaland Public Service Commission, and High School Leaving Certificate & Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations. The programme had commenced with an invocation said by Chonzamo Yanthan, senior leader at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lakhuti. It was followed by a welcome song from the LSU’s executives and then a welcome address by Shanjamo Yanthan, president of the Lakhuti Students’ Union.
