The electoral functionaries, nongovernmental organizations and churches and student organizations have an important role to play to making election clean and fair, an election official has said on Thursday. Special Election Observer, Neposo Theluo, visited Peren on April 23 and conducted meetings with regard to the National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Program (NERPAP) in the deputy commissioner’s conference hall of the new Peren district headquarter.
During meetings with officials, Theluo said that the Election Commission of India had come up with a program known as the NERPAP to prevent multiple registrations of names in the electoral rolls. He said clean elections can curb corruption in the society.
Booth level functionaries, nongovernmental organizations and churches and student organizations have to play an important role at the grass root level to achieve a clean electoral process, the election observer said.
Further, Theluo said referred to another schematic program meant to purge the electoral system, the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP). The campaign was launched to educate people about their roles in the election process, he said.
One of the actions to promote it was that voluntary disclosure of multiple entries was to be awarded certificates of appreciation by the commission, he said. The election observer urged the government officers of Peren district to give their best efforts so that the district would have authentic voters ‘in the days to come’.
Administrative officers, electoral functionaries, and representatives of civil organizations and political parties attended the meeting.
