CM Rio clarifies district election office protocol
KOHIMA — Nagaland Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, stated that district election offices cannot be set up without receiving approval from the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Rio stated this while responding to a starred question raised by MLA Nyamnyei Konyak, who wished to know whether the government is contemplating to create any election office at Tobu, on concluding day of the fourth session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Mentioning that district election offices have the responsibility of managing the conduct of elections to the legislative assembly and the House of People (Lok Sabha) once every five years, Rio apprised that creation of a district election office is contemplated by the state government keeping in mind the ability of such an office to undertake the complex operations involved in conduct of the above-mentioned elections.
He further stated that separate district election offices especially within an existing district cannot be effective unless they are able to function independently from the parent district headquarters.
