IMPHAL — The Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has resumed the removal of phumdis (floating biomass) and cleaning activities at Thanga Chinglak stream, also known as Thamakhong Maril (Thamakhong stream) at Loktak lake, in an effort to promote ecological restoration and cultural preservation.

According to LDA Chairman M Asnikumar Singh, the removal of phumdi and cleaning of Thamakhong Maril is a critical step in the conservation and sustainable management of the lake, and the participation of the local population, despite limited resources, represents a collective effort towards the conservation mission.

He assured that the LDA is committed to completely revitalising Loktak lake and its associated wetlands, taking into account their ecological, socioeconomic, and cultural significance. LDA is consulting with renowned experts for a long-term and holistic approach to completely rejuvenating Loktak lake and its associated wetlands, he added.

Thanga Chinglak/Thamakhong Maril, a vital channel connecting Loktak lake and Longum Pat (also known as Manung Pat), is important in both ecological and socioeconomic-cultural aspects.

According to Meitei mythology and folklore, this channel is of sacred significance as ‘El Chingba’, the legendary fishing spot where Moirang Thoibi from the epic Khamba-Thoibi used to fish.

The resumption of phumdi removal and stream cleaning is expected to deliver multifaceted benefits. It will contribute to preserving Loktak lake’s delicate ecosystem and natural hydrological regime. Additionally, it aligns with the region’s cultural heritage, rekindling the community’s connection with the channel’s mythological significance.
